Keep your cool in the heatwave.
While sunshine is always welcome in Dublin, prolonged hot weather can put unexpected stress on even the healthiest gardens. Plants that are used to Ireland’s mild climate can quickly begin to wilt, dry out or suffer from scorched leaves during a heatwave. With a little extra care, however, you can help your garden stay healthy and vibrant until cooler temperatures return.
The most important job during a heatwave is watering correctly. Rather than giving your plants a light sprinkle every day, water deeply in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower. This allows moisture to soak down to the roots where it is needed most, while reducing evaporation. Plants growing in containers and hanging baskets will need particular attention, as compost dries out much faster than garden soil. Check them daily and don’t be surprised if they need watering twice a day during exceptionally hot weather.
Adding a layer of mulch around your plants is one of the best ways to conserve moisture. Organic mulches such as bark, compost or well-rotted manure help keep the soil cooler, reduce water loss and suppress weeds that compete for precious moisture. Around vegetables, flowers, shrubs and newly planted trees, a generous layer of mulch can make a significant difference during extended dry spells.
If possible, give more delicate plants some protection from the strongest afternoon sun. Moving patio pots to a slightly shadier position, using shade netting, or even placing a garden umbrella over vulnerable plants can prevent leaf scorch. It’s also worth delaying any pruning, fertilising or transplanting until the weather cools, as these jobs can place additional stress on plants that are already struggling with the heat.
Lawns often turn brown during dry periods, but don’t panic. Grass usually enters a dormant state and will recover once regular rainfall returns. Resist the temptation to cut the lawn too short, as slightly longer grass shades the soil and helps retain moisture. Newly laid turf and recently planted shrubs, however, should be given priority when watering as their root systems are still establishing.
