Beetroot – A Simple and Rewarding Crop

Beetroot is one of the easiest and most rewarding vegetables to grow in Dublin gardens. With its vibrant colour, sweet earthy flavour, and impressive versatility in the kitchen, beetroot is a favourite among both beginner and experienced gardeners. It grows exceptionally well in Ireland’s cool, moist climate and can be harvested over a long season, making it an excellent addition to any vegetable patch, raised bed, or even large container.

For the best results, sow beetroot seeds directly into well-prepared soil from spring through to mid-summer. You can also buy plug plants from us at Jessons Garden Center. Choose a sunny position with fertile, free-draining soil that has been enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Sow seeds approximately 2cm deep in rows and keep the soil consistently moist while the seedlings establish. Once the young plants emerge, thin them out to leave around 10cm between each plant. This spacing allows the roots to develop into healthy, well-shaped beetroot.

One of the great advantages of beetroot is its relatively low maintenance nature. Regular watering is important, particularly during dry spells, as inconsistent moisture can cause roots to become woody or split. A light feed during the growing season can help encourage strong growth, but avoid excessive nitrogen-rich fertilisers, which can result in lots of leafy growth at the expense of root development. Keeping the area free from weeds will also help plants thrive by reducing competition for nutrients and water.

Beetroot can usually be harvested when the roots reach the size of a golf ball up to a tennis ball, depending on personal preference. Smaller roots tend to be sweeter and more tender, while larger beetroot can be used for roasting, soups, and salads. Don’t forget that the young leaves are edible too and can be enjoyed in salads or lightly steamed like spinach.

For gardeners looking to extend their harvest, succession sowing every few weeks throughout the season will provide a steady supply of fresh beetroot well into autumn. With minimal effort and reliable results, beetroot is an ideal crop for Dublin gardeners wanting to grow their own delicious and nutritious produce.
