The perfect Summer Garden

July is one of the most rewarding months for gardeners in Dublin. Gardens are bursting with colour, borders are reaching their peak, and many vegetables are ready to harvest. After the hard work of spring planting, July is a time to enjoy the fruits of your labour while carrying out a few essential tasks to keep everything looking its best throughout the summer.

One of the most important jobs in July is watering. While Dublin’s climate is generally kind to gardeners, warm spells can quickly dry out containers, hanging baskets, and newly planted shrubs. Water deeply and less frequently rather than giving plants a light daily sprinkle, encouraging roots to grow deeper into the soil. Applying mulch around plants can also help retain moisture and reduce the need for watering during hot weather.

Flower gardens are often at their finest in July, with roses, dahlias, sweet peas, and herbaceous perennials providing a spectacular display. Regular deadheading will encourage many plants to continue flowering for weeks to come. Sweet peas should be picked frequently, while faded rose blooms can be removed to promote further flushes of flowers. This is also an excellent time to feed flowering plants with a high-potash fertiliser to support continuous blooms.

For vegetable gardeners, July brings plenty of rewards. Potatoes, salads, peas, beans, and early carrots may all be ready for harvesting. Continue sowing quick-growing crops such as lettuce, rocket, beetroot, and spring onions to ensure a steady supply of fresh produce into autumn. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases, as warmer temperatures can encourage aphids, caterpillars, and fungal problems to develop more quickly.

Lawns will benefit from regular mowing during July, although it is wise to raise the cutting height slightly during dry periods to prevent the grass from becoming stressed. Hedges can also be given a light trim to maintain their shape, while summer-flowering shrubs can be lightly tidied as needed.

Above all, July is a month to enjoy your garden. Take time to relax outdoors, admire the pollinators visiting your flowers, and appreciate the colour and abundance that summer brings. Whether you are maintaining a large family garden or a small city space, a little care now will keep your garden looking beautiful for the rest of the season.
