Camellias quietly steal the show at Jesson Garden Centre

Camellias: Evergreen Elegance for Dublin Gardens

At our Dublin garden centre, camellias are one of those plants that quietly steal the show. When much of the garden is still waking up, camellias burst into bloom with stunning, rose-like flowers and glossy evergreen leaves that look good all year round.

If you’re looking to add colour, structure, and a touch of classic elegance to your garden, camellias are a fantastic choice.

What Are Camellias?

Camellias are evergreen shrubs, originally from Asia, that are prized for their beautiful blooms and rich, dark green foliage. Two of the most popular types you’ll come across are Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua.

Their flowers can be simple or fully double, and come in shades of white, pink, red, and even variegated patterns. Some varieties are neat and compact, while others can grow into large, striking shrubs over time.

A Welcome Splash of Early Colour

One of the biggest advantages of camellias is their flowering season.

  • Late winter to spring (Camellia japonica) – perfect for lifting the garden after the colder months
  • Autumn to early winter (Camellia sasanqua) – bringing colour when little else is in bloom

In Dublin gardens, this makes camellias especially valuable—they bridge the seasonal gaps and keep your garden looking alive for more of the year.

Where Do Camellias Look Best?

Camellias are versatile but really shine in certain settings:

1. Woodland-Style Planting
They thrive in slightly shaded conditions, making them ideal alongside ferns, hostas, and other shade lovers for a soft, natural look.

2. Feature Shrubs in Borders
A camellia can act as a focal point in a border, especially when in full bloom. Their structured shape provides year-round interest.

3. Against Walls and Fences
Planted against a sheltered wall, camellias benefit from protection and can create a lush, evergreen backdrop.

4. Containers on Patios
Compact varieties grow very well in pots, making them perfect for patios, terraces, and even balconies.

Growing Camellias in Dublin

Camellias are well suited to Irish conditions, but they do have a few specific needs:

  • Soil: They prefer acidic soil (ericaceous compost is ideal in containers)
  • Light: Partial shade is best—avoid strong morning sun, which can damage early blooms
  • Shelter: Protect from cold, drying winds
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells

One key tip we always share: avoid planting camellias too deeply. Keep the root ball level with the soil surface to help them establish properly.

Easy Care, Long-Term Reward

Camellias are relatively low maintenance once established.

  • Minimal pruning required—just tidy after flowering if needed
  • Feed in spring with an ericaceous fertiliser
  • Mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil

With the right care, a camellia can thrive for decades, becoming a real feature in your garden.

A Classic Choice That Never Dates

There’s a timeless quality to camellias. Their glossy leaves, perfectly formed blooms, and structured growth bring a sense of calm and sophistication to any outdoor space.

Whether you’re working with a compact Dublin garden, a shaded courtyard, or a larger planted border, camellias offer reliable beauty year after year.
