Caterpillars – Dealing with the buxus blues

Buxus, commonly known as box, has long been a favourite in Irish gardens thanks to its evergreen foliage, versatility, and ability to create beautiful formal shapes and hedging. Whether used as a low border, topiary feature, or statement container plant, healthy buxus provides year-round structure and colour. With the right care, these hardy shrubs can thrive for many years in Dublin gardens.

To keep buxus looking its best, choose a position with well-drained soil and either full sun or partial shade. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly for newly planted specimens, but avoid waterlogged conditions which can stress the roots. Applying a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring will encourage healthy growth and vibrant green foliage. Annual trimming during late spring or early summer helps maintain a neat shape while promoting dense, compact growth. Good air circulation around the plants is also important, helping to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

One of the biggest challenges facing buxus growers in recent years has been the box tree caterpillar. These voracious pests can strip a plant of its leaves in a surprisingly short time if left unchecked. Regular inspection is the key to early detection. Look for webbing within the plant, chewed leaves, and green caterpillars hiding among the foliage. The sooner an infestation is identified, the easier it is to control.

For smaller infestations, caterpillars can be removed by hand and disposed of. For larger outbreaks, biological controls containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are highly effective and specifically target caterpillars while being safer for beneficial insects when used correctly. Thorough coverage of the foliage is essential, as caterpillars often shelter deep within the plant. Regular monitoring throughout the growing season is recommended, as multiple generations of caterpillars can appear each year.

By combining good plant care with routine inspections, your buxus can remain healthy, attractive, and resilient for many years. Visit Jesson Garden Centre for expert advice, quality buxus plants, and effective solutions to help protect your garden from box tree caterpillars.
